Where to Worship Near Center Hill Lake

For a Catholic Mass, begin with St. Gregory in Smithville. For an independent Churches of Christ congregation, consider Smithville Church of Christ; for a Reformed Presbyterian service, Faith Presbyterian in Silver Point. First Baptist Smithville offers Baptist worship and organized small groups. Smithville First United Methodist is another established town congregation. Faith Chapel near Baxter describes itself as Pentecostal based and non-denominational. These labels point to different theology, music, sacraments and approaches to church life.

If denomination is essential to you, follow the congregation’s own beliefs page before relying on a broad label here. Do not assume that every congregation handles communion, children’s care or visitor participation the same way.

Faith Presbyterian Church meets at 9177 Roberts Road, Silver Point. Its church site lists Sunday prayer at 9:00 a.m., morning worship at 9:45, Christian education at 11:10 and evening worship at 5:30. Its site describes FaithKids through fifth grade and a student ministry for grades six through twelve, with Wednesday activities too. Smithville is a town outing from most lake homes. Pair worship with lunch or an errand rather than assuming it is just around the cove. The lake’s arms and roads make mileage a poor guide to arrival time; use directions from your actual lodging address.

Its site lists Sunday Bible class at 9:00 a.m. and morning worship at 10:00, with a Wednesday gathering at 7:00 p.m. It describes leadership by elders and names youth and day-school ministries. If you come from a Churches of Christ background, read the congregation’s beliefs page rather than treating it as a generic Protestant service. If you are new to the tradition, ask about communion and worship practice if those distinctions shape your choice.

Smithville First United Methodist is at 108 North Fourth Street. The United Methodist directory lists an 11:00 a.m. main service and 615-597-4961. It does not describe current music, nursery or access arrangements, so call before choosing it on those grounds. Be careful with search results for “First UMC Smithville”: a prominent site belongs to Smithville, Texas.

St. Gregory Catholic Church is at 712 West Main Street. Its parish page lists Sunday Masses at 10:15 a.m. in English and 11:00 a.m. in English/Spanish, plus Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The overlap in the posted Sunday times deserves a direct check at 615-597-1970. If you need a particular language, confession or holiday Mass, confirm the current bulletin or call.

Faith Chapel Ministries, 8250 Nashville Highway in Baxter, describes itself as non-denominational and Pentecostal based, with casual dress and preaching from the King James Bible. Its visit page lists Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. and morning worship at 10:30. That is a different service expectation from Presbyterian, Methodist or Catholic worship, and may be exactly what you seek.

The church’s home and visitor pages disagree about Sunday evening and Wednesday times. Confirm either directly. Baxter is a more practical direction when your day continues toward I-40 or Cookeville than when you plan to return immediately to the lake’s southern side.

Enter the church’s street address into maps from your actual stay, and add time for winding roads, parking and finding the right entrance. I would arrive 10–15 minutes before a listed service, longer if children need check-in. A published kids ministry does not prove that every age group meets during every service. If a ramp, accessible restroom, hearing support, language accommodation or quiet space matters, contact the congregation directly before Sunday.

Visitors are usually welcome, but worship is not a cultural demonstration. Follow the congregation’s lead on communion, photographs and movement during prayer. You need not share a church’s beliefs to treat its service with respect; you also do not need to attend a service merely to see a historic building.

Churches around Center Hill Lake have long held education, mutual aid, music, family memory and burial alongside worship. Salem Baptist in Liberty, Seay Chapel near Alexandria, and West End Church of Christ at Silver Point belong to different histories. West End’s link to the Silver Point Christian Institute makes Black church and education history central to this region. These are active or community-held places, not open museums.

Seay Chapel near Alexandria represents the central role Black congregations played after emancipation: worship, schooling, leadership and mutual support under segregation. The building’s modest form says little about the scale of that work. W. E. B. Du Bois taught near Alexandria as a young man and wrote about Black religious and community life. Local interpretation has linked that experience to particular congregations, including Seay Chapel; a direct institutional connection requires a surviving record. Salem Baptist in Liberty provides another lesson: the congregation’s early nineteenth-century beginnings and later sanctuaries are different dates. Cemeteries can preserve family and community history, but repeated surnames are clues rather than proof of kinship. Read from public paths without rubbing stones or entering during a burial.
