Protect the middle four hours
Use the first hour for orientation and the final hour for the return, fuel and delay. That leaves four useful hours. A distant waterfall, unreserved boat rental or full regional loop does not fit honestly.

Use weather to remove options
Lightning removes boating. High water or closures remove a gorge route. Extreme heat removes exposed midday hiking. Use the Rainy-Day Rescue Planner rather than forcing the original anchor.
Margin is part of the outing
End before the schedule becomes fragile
