Find the school inside the church story
At Silver Point, look for the documented connection among West End Church of Christ, community education and the Silver Point Christian Institute. Ask why a church could also become educational infrastructure in a segregated rural landscape.

Follow Du Bois before fame
W.E.B. Du Bois taught in rural Tennessee during his Fisk years. The surviving record is powerful but incomplete; distinguish documented locations and recollections from later inference. Read the fully sourced Du Bois guide before driving.

Look for the institution, not only the marker
Black communities built durable institutions under unequal conditions. A modest church, school site or newspaper reference may reveal more about power and persistence than a grand monument. Do not enter private property or disturb cemeteries.
Displacement · Record gaps · Memory
Ask what the landscape leaves out
Reservoir creation, road changes, migration and redevelopment can make community history hard to see. Absence from a modern map is not proof that a community was absent. Use archives, census records, church histories and oral histories together.
Evidence · Respect · Correction
Complete the route thoughtfully
Use the broader African American heritage collection for destinations and sources. Photograph markers and public buildings, write down questions and submit a correction when local knowledge complicates the published account.
