Pates Ford

Fishlipz Resort & Grill at Pates Ford advertises slips, pontoons, houseboats, cabins and RV sites. That makes it more than a lunch pin: a group can build a boat-centered stay here. The Smithville mailing address still does not put it beside downtown or Sligo by road. Route to Pates Ford.

Ask what you need the water to do. Bringing a trailer? Find a confirmed launch and ask about ramp condition, parking and fees. Renting a pontoon? Confirm inventory, arrival time, operator rules and return procedure. Meeting friends with a slip? Get the correct dock and parking instructions. Hoping to swim? A marina is not a designated beach, and a launch lane is not a swimming area.

The Corps’ designated public swim areas are Ragland Bottom Day Use and Floating Mill Day Use, with the Floating Mill campground beach reserved for registered campers. These may require a separate road trip from your southern base. If swimming is the trip’s center, decide whether that drive is worth it before booking lodging on the assumption that every cove has public beach access.

The Sligo crossing explains the landscape better than another “scenic drive” label. When Center Hill Dam filled the valley, a 1948 truss bridge carried US 70 across this reach. Tennessee’s transportation department began replacing it in 2013 and opened the wider bridge in 2016. The crossing is a practical connection between roads separated by the reservoir, not simply a landmark seen from a dock.

The Corps describes Ye Ole Red Post Trail as nearly two miles and steep, with views of Center Hill Lake, Sligo Bridge and the marina. This is a real climb, not a token stroll after lunch. Check its current trailhead and access before promising it to a mixed-mobility group.

If the trail suits you, make it the day’s physical anchor and follow it with a confirmed meal at Sligo. If it does not, the marina and bridge may still make an appealing short stop, but they are not a substitute for a public beach or an all-day park. Give the remainder of the day to a Smithville stop on the return road.

Pates Ford works best when the marina itself is the anchor. A pontoon outing needs a reservation, arrival margin, weather judgment and a return time. A houseboat or cabin stay changes the whole basecamp decision. The operator lists RV sites as well, so a group can build several kinds of trip around this arm rather than treating it only as a restaurant destination.

That range is exactly why I would not imply that a boat rental, slip, cabin and dinner are one transaction. Verify each separately, including capacity, cancellation terms, fuel, pet rules where relevant and the current kitchen schedule. A waterfront meal can be a fine finish when the restaurant is serving and the kitchen hours fit the boat return. Sligo’s restaurant and Fishlipz at Pates Ford are names to check with their marinas, not promises that dinner will be available on a particular day. If the group wants predictable variety or lower cost, use the dining chooser to compare Smithville and other towns by starting corridor, price and pace.

Do not add Cookeville out of habit to a southern-lake day. The best restaurant on paper is the wrong one if everyone is tired and it sends the car across the region before turning home. McMinnville can work when Warren County is already the day’s direction, especially if a cave visit is the anchor rather than an afterthought.
